How long does it take to reverse alopecia areata

August 20th, 2007

The best way I can describe the process is by is by an analogy:
If you are driving at 30 MPH in your car and you step on the breaks your car takes about 75 yards to stop. You can stand up on the breaks as hard as you like but never stop in 5 yards.

If you are travelling at 60 MPH it can take 210 yards to stop - same car / same breaks, just the velocity dictates how long it takes to stop. It’s impossible to reverse the car before stopping it first and similarly with alopecia you have to stop its progress before you reverse it. To add to the confusion it is common for new patches of alopecia to start up at the same time as old patches are showing signs of re-growth.So the answer to how long does it take to reverse alopecia areata
depends to a large extent on the speed of its progression before you start your treatment and the stress you put your system under worrying about it - because stress can make the problem worse.

The hair loss you see today is a result of an immune reaction that took place some time ago. Many people start to avoid washing or brushing their hair through fear that this will speed along the loss, because it is at the point of brushing and washing they see the greatest evidence of hair loss. The task is to project your mind forward in time, because today’s treatment will not show through into new hair-growth for a number of months.

This is very difficult because at times you may feel helpless because there is nothing else that can be done other than sit and wait. Then fear may creep in and you start wondering what if I had done this or that. The most important thing to do once you have commenced your treatment is to learn as much as you can about stress and how to keep your stress response in check. Stress has become such an important part of our modern lifestyles that it is difficult to image a stress free life. However what many people do not realise is that dietary stress can cause the same physiological changes that emotional stress can. For example drinking too much tea and coffee can over-rev the system. Alcohol can dehydrate you which can also invoke a stress response.

Do alopecia treatments actually work?

August 18th, 2007

One of the most troublesome forms of hair loss is alopecia areata. Often a small patch the size of a dime appears on the scalp and can go in one of three directions:

It can: stabilise / reverse / or spread rampantly.

There isn’t a specialist anywhere in the world who can predict exactly which direction your alopecia will take. That is where you may find yourself in a double bind: If your stress levels are low, such a patch may clear up all on its own without treatment. On the other hand it could spread across the entire scalp / body and therefore it isn’t easy relaxing and hoping that it clears up all on it’s own.

If you see websites with before and after pictures of people than have reversed alopecia areata,  you will not know 100% for certain if it was the product or good fortune that got them their hair back - yet it’s hard not to worry when you awake each morning to a pillow covered in hair, so logically you will want to be pro-active:

Enter another catch 22: there are many alopecia support forums on the web, yet they usually fall into one of three categories:

1) They are run by people that have lost all their hair and are sceptical that anything can be done to grow it back. Hard to stay positive in a generally negative forum!

2) They charge you just for joining - why when teh whole point of forums was free advise.

3) They earn their keep from advertising.

There is a technical point that most people are not aware of: The greater the percentage of scalp hair lost, the lower the percentage chance of it simple growing back on its own with no treatment.  For example if you have had no hair for ten years it is very unlikely one day to simply start up growing again all on its own. We therefore thought that it would be useful to show a wide selection of photographs of all extents of loss: Our logic was that if we keep reversing very difficult patterns that have failed to respond to other treatments, then logically our product must be doing something that could not simply be put down to spontaneous remission.

People doubt the pictures!!  If you ask a graphic artist to fake hair regrowth he will say sure that is easy - however it is also very easier to spot a doctored picture, you simply enlarge the image and it becomes pretty clear what is real and what is not.

We then thought it useful to build a totally proactive forum where we follow the progress of those that are actually regrowing their hair on a real time basis. We even sharply discounted the product cost to say thank you to the brave souls that would bare and share their heads to the world.

Now the biggest problem when dealing on the web is that you can get ripped off easily, so we thought a money back guarantee would solve that problem.

We had wrongly assumed that once you have all of the above in place  ( A good “happy users” gallery, open cases to follow on a real-time basis, a money back guarantee - next day delivery) the website would grind to a halt: Strangely alopecia seems to be a case of crying wolf too many time:

Now an answer exists no one really believes it !!!

Can pet allergies cause alopecia ?

August 16th, 2007

We know that the auto-immune system is involved in alopecia.
It is also common for people to be allergic to their pets, however could there be a link?
This question was raised by one of our customers who’s son reversed his alopecia in just three months. She feels that the cause may be down to his cat so we thought it useful to set up a poll and ask alopecians if they agree / disagree.

Let’s examine the logic for a moment:

An allergy is simply the immune system expressing itself against an allergen - in this case the cats fur. In alopecia the immune system gets confused and starts attacking the body’s own hair follicle. An allergy can make the immune system over reactive. In this case the 11 year old boy has hayfever and reacts to numerous other allergens. Could the cat allergy be the final overload that cause the breakdown in the immune system?

Conventional treatment for alopecia involves suppression of the immune system usually by steroids. However immune suppression is not advisable for long term treatment, so we approach the problem from a different prospective: why did the immune system fail in the fist place and what can be done to correct the malfunction, rather than suppress the system.

We are pleased to report that this happy boy has got to keep his hair and his cat !!

The Catch 22 of alopecia.

August 16th, 2007

Stress is known to cause alopecia. Yet alopecia itself is very stressful, so it is not uncommon to see people caught in a catch 22 whereby the very stress of their hair loss itself makes the situation worse.

Alopecia often starts off as a single patch that can then go in one of four directions: Either the patch remains contained, reverses back to normal hair, spreads slowly or spreads rampantly. At one extreme you could end up with not a single hair anywhere on the scalp or body and at the other end of the spectrum the hair could return back to normal, so it is clearly stressful. In a way it would be far easier to handle mentally if someone could be told upfront: sorry bad news I am afraid, this is going to progress to 30% scalp loss. You would then expect to see further loss and that loss would be less stressful. It’s the fact that you do not know where the loss will end up that keeps the mind in a negative loop. Every hair that falls is evidence that the situation is getting worse and that in itself is stressful and the very stress can actually make the situation worse.

Similarly there seems to be no set rules of how alopecia spreads: We have seen examples where a patch on the scalp or eyebrow has progressed to the entire body. In other cases it has stubbornly remainly contained  for many years. It is all about prospective really: If you have a stubborn patch that does’t seem to go away it can be very stressful. Yet to someone that has lost every hair on their body, they would love just one little patch to deal with !

One needs to follow a path that is pro-active when dealing with alopecia.
The mind has the ability to quieten down once your brain knows that you are taking the best possible action you can, even if the results are not due for a number of months. We also feel that it is important to know what the best and worse case scenarios are, so that you are prepared to take action in either event. A problem with our overworked medical system is that often you have to wait a number of months to meet a top dermatologist. Not only is such a wait stressful, it may actually allow the alopecia to get worse. Accordingly we suggest that you start with our Natural Alopecia Treatment in the interim. Not only does this lower the stress, in many instances the problem has cleared up before your appointment comes around.

One of the problems of the web is that the people who tend to “hang out ” in alopecia discussion forums are the very people that have not been able to solve their own problem -  hence it would be easy to conclude that nothing can actually be done. Those people that have solved their problem tend to go about their everyday business and never bother to look into alopecia discussion forums. It follows that very few of the postings are from happy encouraging people !

We therefore decided to set up a forum with a difference: We invited people to let us follow their progress as they treat their alopecia and share with others their thoughts and fears. Then by inviting other people who we know have been successful in similar situations we can all learn what to expect. More importantly it is a proactive site where we examine only what works rather than what doesn’t.

A very good example is that in cases of Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis, the scalp is usually slower to respond to treatment than say the brows or body hair. However if you know this and see body hair or the brows returning before the scalp, it tells you that you are on track.

Let’s be frank, there are a great number of products that are peddled on the web for alopecia which haven’t got the slightest chance of ever working.

There is nothing more stressful than patiently trying a product only to find that a year later you have no results and a smaller bank balance.

Accordingly we advise long standing cases to opt for just our eyebrow treatment first as it is relatively inexpensive and yet can yield faster results than a scalp treatment. Calosol Eyebrow Treatment

There are those that hold the view that you should accept your lot and not build your hopes up. Progress is never made with such a mind set. Imagine if we all said ” if man were meant to fly, we would have wings”  -  what a different place the world would be today without air travel.

Calosol.com - Children Alopecia

August 10th, 2007

As the parent of a child suffering from alopecia areata, we know you want the safest solution to your child’s problem.

We also know that you may have received a lot of conflicting information about alopecia areata.

The good news is that often a small patch will correct itself without treatment. If it does, it may be gone for ever or may return at a later date. There is currently no way of being certain.

However the dilemma that a parent such as yourself faces is that in a number of instances the patch or patches can spread rampantly and may extend to the eyebrows and eye lashes. So it is difficult to just wait and hope it stays contained.

That is why we encourage parents to start using Calosol as fast as possible. What you will find throughout this website are pictures of children that have successfully treated their Alopecia with the Calosol range. In fact we have designed a special gentle range especially for children.
